I agree, it seems like this was done to show they could do it rather than what actually works best for the user. An exceedingly common pitfall.

When I drive, I can use the physical dials and buttons to work out where my hand is without having to actually take my eyes of the road. The feel of the controls are an important part of making them easy to use.
